Carter pledges support for polls

    KATHMANDU, NOV 17 -
Former US President Jimmy Carter has assured all the necessary  support to conduct the Constituent Assembly election scheduled for next week in a free, fair and credible manner and promulgate the new constitution in a democratic way.
Carter, who also chairs The Carter Centre, an international poll observation institution, said he will do his best to make Nepal’s election process a success to deliver the constitution through the CA.
In a meeting with former Prime Minister and senior UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal on Saturday, Carter urged the former to share poll-related problems if he has any.
“Though we cannot directly be the part of election process we can raise your concern at the international forums. Share your concern if you have any obstruction in the election,” a UML source quoted Carter as saying.
In response, Nepal said parties have been carrying election campaigns more safely than the previous CA polls, despite minor obstruction from poll-opposing parties led by the CPN-Maoist. He stressed on the need to bring the Mohan Baidya-led party on board the constitution writing process despite failing to convince it to participate in the election process.
“All the parties are serious this time and the new constitution will be promulgated in the prescribed time,” Nepal saod.
Carter is scheduled to meet President Ram Baran Yadav, Chairman of the Interim Election Government Khil Raj Regmi and officials of the Election Commission on Sunday.
