BP Koirala was nation's true statesman- Regmi

  • National Reconciliation Day observed

KATHMANDU, DEC 31 - 
Chairman of the Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi has said that BP Koirala 's contribution was spectacular not only to propel politics and literature but also to the institutional development of judiciary in Nepal.

Addressing a function organised to mark the 28th National Reconciliation Day at Sundarijal-based BP Museum on Tuesday, Chairman Regmi recalled that it was BP's prime ministerial tenure when the Supreme Court was established and Hari Prasad Pradhan was made the first Chief Justice of the country.

"Koirala, who had sacrificed his entire life for the establishment and consolidation of democracy, was the statesman of the country beyond the particular party," Regmi said.

He further said BP's thoughts on democracy and socialism for the economic prosperity of the people and the nation are still relevant.

BP also established his unique identity in the realm of Nepali literature, Regmi said, adding that his literary writing has also helped transform the Nepali society.

Regmi noted that the second Constituent Assembly (CA) should work for establishing peace and prosperity by internalising the spirit of national reconciliation, unity and harmony.

On the occasion, Chairman Regmi observed the BP Museum and offered floral tributes to the idols of Nepal's veteran freedom fighters--BP and Ganeshman Singh.

One of the founding members of Nepali Congress, BP Koirala , also the first elected prime minister of Nepal, was detained in Sundarijal prison after he returned homeland ending eight-year-long self exile in India in 2033 BS citing nationality under threat.

The prison was declared BP Museum in Bhadra 24, 2061 BS.
