Typhoon Haiyan batters Philippines

Typhoon Haiyan batters Philippines

The strongest typhoon this year has slammed into the central Philippines, setting off landslides and knocking out power and communication lines in several provinces.

At least three people have died, but it may take days before the full damage is known.
Typhoon Haiyan raced across a string of islands from east to west - Samar, Leyte, Cebu and Panay- and lashed beach communities with winds of up to 199mph.
Authorities have warned that more than 12 million people are at risk from the storm: the equivalent of a category five hurricane.
