NI21's Basil McCrea: Stormont should have power to raise taxes



The NI21 leader Basil McCrea will call for greater fiscal powers for the Stormont Executive later on Saturday.
John McCallister and Basil McCrea have launched a new partyHe wants Westminster to allow local politicians the authority to raise income tax and stamp duty.

He will tell his party's first conference in Belfast that such a move would concentrate the minds of politicians and the electorate alike.
Mr McCrea will also call for legislation to create an opposition at Stormont.
He will also suggest that the office of the first and deputy first minister (OFMDFM) should be renamed the Office of Joint First Minister, and that the Speaker of the assembly should be elected by secret ballot.
One of NI21's invited speakers at its conference is the Fine Gael TD Brian Hayes.
NI21 was set up last June by MLAs Basil McCrea and John McCallister, who both left the Ulster Unionist Party.
