KATHMANDU, JUN 24 -
Chinese State Councillor Yang Jiechi is arriving in Kathmandu on Monday afternoon on a two-day official visit to express Chinese support to and solidarity with the ongoing political as well as election processes.
Towards that end, two agreements will be signed during his visit—one with the Election Commission, where China will give Rs 155.50 million/10 million RMB for the November polls, according to Madhav Ghimire, the Minister for Foreign and Home Affairs and Yang’s counterpart during the visit.
Ghimire and Yang are set to hold delegation-level talks on Monday evening.
Another agreement will be signed to set up an Armed Police Force (APF) training academy, where China has agreed to grant Rs 3.06 billion.
During his visit to Nepal last year, former Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao had exchanged notes on Chinese assistance in building the academy.
Yang is also set to open the Kathmandu Ring Road Improvement Project on Tuesday. Yang will be the highest level foreign dignitary to visit Nepal after the formation of the Interim Election Government. He will be meeting Vice President Paramananda Jha, Government Chairman Khil Raj Regmi and Cabinet ministers.
In keeping with the new Chinese policy of having good relations with parties across the political spectrum, Yang will also meet top leaders of major political parties and take stock of the latest political situation in Nepal. He is a well known Nepal hand in Beijing and looks after foreign policy issues as State Councillor. He earlier visited Nepal in 2008 in the capacity of the Foreign Minister.
