Rs 10m bail set for Chakre Milan
KATHMANDU, JUN 13 -
The Special Court on Wednesday set a bail amount of Rs 10 million for Chakre Milan who is accused of amassing property worth Rs 70.8 million through illegal means. Milan’s wife Indira Gurung, however, was asked to furnish Rs 200,000 as bail.
After conducting preliminary hearing, the court demanded the bail from gangster Gurung who is currently serving his jail term on the charge of drug smuggling. “He is already in jail so there is no need to send him to judicial custody. But, he has not yet posted the bail as demanded by the court,” said Court Registrar Dhir Bahadur Chand.
Gurung’s wife, however, was released after posting the bail set by the court. The Gurung couple was present at the court for the hearing.
On May 20, the Department of Money Laundering Investigation (DoMLI) had filed separate cases against five gangsters-Milan, Parshuram Basnet, Ganesh Lama, Deepak Manange and Abhishek Giri—at the court on the charge of amassing millions of rupees through illegal means.
Earlier, the court had sought Rs 20 million as bail from Basnet who is accused of amassing Rs 110.10 million illegally. Basnet, a central member of the CPN-UML-affiliated Youth Association Nepal (YAN), is still in judicial custody despite posting his property as bail. Basnet is a permanent resident of Morang district. “We have instructed the Morang District Court and the District Land Revenue Office to certify the property details as demanded,” said Chand. The DoMLI charge sheet claims that Basnet hoarded 11 kattha of land, hundreds of bank shares and vehicles worth Rs 6.4 million illegally. All the five accused have political patronage.
Of the accused, Manange, Giri and Lama, who is also a Madheshi Janadhikar Forum Loktantrik leader, are still at large.
Lama with illegal property worth Rs 270 million tops the list while Manange and Giri are accused of amassing property worth Rs 140.7 and 20.9 million respectively. “The court has also ordered the Kathmandu District Court to inform the remaining three accused about the case and asked them to appear before the court,” added Chand.
Meanwhile, the YAN has decided to collect funds for Basnet’s bail.
