RAUTAHAT, JUN 08 - A mob of some so-called upper caste people attacked a Dalit settlement at Bhingdabar in Pipariya Dostiya-8, Rautahat, on Friday night.
The assailants thrashed the locals and vandalise d the houses. Fourteen inhabitants of the Dalit settlement were injured in the attack. The unruly mob, according to the victims, also carried out looting spree in the settlement. The injured are undergoing treatment at Gaur Hospital and Garuda-based Anamika Hospital.
"A huge number of people barged into the settlement and attacked us indiscriminately and vandalise d our residences. They entered into our houses and vandalise d various goods and food grains," said Guru Dayal Ram who sustained injuries in the incident.
The victims said the assailants also looted the settlement and uprooted a water tap. Bipin Gautam, a rights activist, said 65 houses in the Dalit settlement were vandalise d in the incident.
Panic gripped the Dalit settlement after the incident. Some Dalityouths reportedly fled the village fearing further attack.
The Friday's nasty incident occurred following a month-long dispute over the Dalit 's entry in a local temple. They beat and misbehaved the Dalit s on May 14 as the latter entered into Bramhasthan Bhagawati Temple and worshipped the deity.
"They attacked the settlement in revenge as we lodged a complaint at police demanding action," said Jitani Devi Ram, an injured elderly woman. She said the assailants did not spare even the women and the elderly persons.
Dharmendra Pasawan, a Dalit rights activist, said the so-called higher caste people exerted pressure to the victims to withdraw the case. They attacked the settlement for ignoring their threats, he added.
Meanwhile, Chief District Officer Dil Bahadur Ghimire along with high level security officials visited the incident site and inquired about the incidents on Saturday. Terming the Friday's attack as a heinous crime, Ghimire assured that the guilty would be brought to book immediately.
Superintendent of Police Govinda Pariyar said Chhotelal Yadav and Ram Dev Yadav were arrested in connection with the incident. Security has been beefed up in the area to prevent any untoward incidents.
