Koirala likely to resign Chitwan-4

CHITWAN, NOV 30 - Despite Nepali Congress leaders and cadres urging party President Sushil Koirala, who won from two constituencies (Banke-3 and Chitwan-4), not to resign from Chitwan-4, Koirala is likely to leave the constituency.

An NC district committee source said the party is mounting pressures on Koirala to resign from Chitwan-4 and that Koirala himself has chosen Banke-3 over the constituency.

A central office source said that Koirala and Sher Bahadur Deuba, who won from Dadeldhura and Kailali-6, were receiving pressures to leave one of the constituencies, which are the party's strongholds. Koirala, however, has expressed his reluctance at the district level to leave Chitwan.

Koirala's winning in Chitwan with a huge margin is said to have prompted the NC to force Koirala to leave Chitwan, believing that the party will win the by-election.

Koirala defeated UCPN (Maoist)'s Chitra Bahadur Shrestha with a margin of 10,000 votes from Chitwan-4 while he won from Banke-3 with 2,000 extra votes.

“We have urged the President not to leave Chitwan as far as possible. However, voices are being raised at the central level make him resign from Chitwan-4,” said NC district President Tek Prasad Gurung.

He said that Koirala himself showed his willingness to resign from Chitwan-4. NC leaders and cadres, however, are pressing Koirala not to leave the district. They believe that like Shashank Koirala, who won from Nawalparasi-1 for two consecutive terms, NC's influence could be established in Chitwan too if Koirala retains the Chitwan seat.

“We will urge the President not to leave the district to establish NC's influence in both Nawalparasi and Chitwan districts. We plan to make Narayangadh NC's second stronghold after Biratnagar,” said Gurung.
