KATHMANDU, DEC 30 - The Federal Socialist Party Nepal (FSPN) on Sunday formed a six-member panel under Rakam Chemjong to finalise party's candidates for the proportional representation (PR) electoral system.
Panel members said they are working to keep regional, ethnic and gender balance in the final list. Though Chairman Ashok Rai is "almost confirmed" to go to the Constituent Assembly, the party will have tough time selecting other candidates. The party formed last year has got five seats under the PR category.
Ang Kaji Sherpa, a panelist, said there has been unanimous agreement to send one candidate each from Madhesi, Dalit, Janajati and Khas Arya communities. He said that the party will send two female candidates although the Election Commission has requested it to select three. The party has also been trying to maintain geographical balance in the selections.
“The party has got a small number of seats while there are several aspirants in the party. The panel will prepare a shortlist and forward it to the standing committee for final approval,” said Sherpa.
Sources said many leaders in the party are unhappy about Chairman Rai's plan to enter the CA. They have been urging the top leadership to concentrate on party expansion and organisation-strengthening while clearing way for new faces to represent the party in the Assembly. Dissidents in the party argue that the focus of the top leaders should be on strengthening the party after its poor show in the polls.
Other members of the panel include Ajambar Kangmang, Rijwan Ansari, Gopal Thakur, Horilal Chaudhary and Ganesh Gurung.
