Bodies of woman and boy found at house in Bonnyrigg

BBC News

The bodies of a woman and her son have been found in a house in Midlothian.

The discovery was made at a property in South Chesters Lane, Bonnyrigg at 20:30 on Saturday.

Police Scotland said the alarm was raised by a member of the public who was concerned about the family. The boy is thought to be under five years old.

A 32-year-old man is being treated in hospital following the deaths. Police said they were not looking for anyone else in relation to the matter.

Ch Insp Colin Brown said: "The man is being treated as a patient, however there are police officers with him in hospital.

"This is a tragic set of circumstances and our thoughts are with the families who have been affected.

"We are keeping an open mind as to what occurred within this property, but I want to reassure members of the local community and neighbours that such incidents are relatively rare and a comprehensive investigation is underway.

"We are grateful to the support we are receiving from the neighbours while we carry out our inquiries."
