Uzbekistan: Dad renamed son 'to cure illness'

Uzbekistan: Dad renamed son 'to cure illness'

An Uzbek dad who'd called his son Jumong after a Korean hero renamed him to cure his "frequent illnesses", it has been suggested.
Prince Jumong, a founder of one of Korea's three ancient kingdoms, is known to a huge audience in Uzbekistan thanks to state-run TV replacing racy Turkish historical serials with South Korean soap operas after relations with Turkey cooled. However, the Darakchi tabloid says the family of the man, from the Surkhandarya region on the Afghan border, regularly complained about the boy not having a traditional Muslim name.
The report suggests that because the infant suffered "frequent illnesses", the father eventually agreed to give him a new name that "corresponds to his nationality and religion". "Everything went back to normal with the family and child once he was renamed," Darakchi suggests.
