Satellite and aerial images of the Philippines show the extent of the devastation in low-lying areas such as Tacloban on Leyte Island and Guiuan, in Eastern Samar province.

In Tacloban itself, the largest city on Leyte Island, up to 10,000 people may have died. Survivors have been sifting through the wreckage of their homes.

The airport in Tacloban was badly damaged by the storm, with buildings smashed, trees uprooted and vehicles overturned. Military planes are now able to land to bring much-needed aid.

Guiuan town

Guiuan was among the first areas where the typhoon made landfall and left a trail of devastation. There have been reports of warehouses being looted as people search for food and supplies.
