AP McCoy: Jockey seeks two Exeter wins for 4,000 landmark

Record-breaking jockey AP McCoy could make history at Exeter on Tuesday as he seeks two wins to reach the milestone of 4,000 jump racing victories.
The 18-time champion jockey moved on to the 3,998 mark with two winners at Kempton on Monday.
Northern Irishman McCoy, 39, has three booked rides at Exeter - where he had his first British success in 1994.
"It would be very fitting. If I had one winner I'd be delighted. Two would be amazing," he told BBC Breakfast.
McCoy has been champion every year since his first season as a professional in 1995-1996.

AP McCoy
  • Born: Moneyglass, County Antrim, 4 May 1974
  • Full name: Anthony Peter McCoy
  • First winner: Legal Steps at Thurles in Tipperary, 26 March 1992 (aged 17)
  • 3,000th career winner over jumps: Restless D'Artaix, Plumpton 9 February 2009
  • Height: 5ft 10.5in
  • Weight: 10st 5lbs
He is the only jump jockey ever to have ridden more than 3,000 winners, with perennial title runner-up Richard Johnson next closest on more than 2,500.
The rider moved closer to his latest landmark at Kempton thanks to wins on Foundation Man and Captain Cutter.
McCoy said he was trying to treat Tuesday as a normal day, but added: "If I could ride two winners it would be a very irregular day [because of the landmark]."
He regards novice hurdler Flemenson (13:50 GMT), trained by Jonjo O'Neill, as his leading contender of the afternoon.
"Flemenson is probably my best chance. Keen Eye (14:20) probably hasn't got much chance, while Well Hello There (15:50) wouldn't want too much rain at Exeter," the jockey added.
McCoy may be cheered to know on his journey to the Devon track, which is expected to welcome a bumper crowd, that the forecast is for largely sunny spells.
Gordon Edwards, who trained McCoy's first-ever winner Chickabiddy, told BBC Radio 5 live: "We'll always remember that day. For me as a small trainer, it was a special moment for us.
"We hadn't met him before the day, but he came highly recommended by his agent Dave Roberts and luckily he was on our horse on that day and did a really good job.
"Mick Fitzgerald would normally have ridden for us, but he was injured a couple of days before. He was always in close contact with Dave and he said a new lad had come over from Ireland and it wouldn't be long before he rode a winner and luckily it was for us."
Since a five-timer at Carlisle on 24 October, McCoy has ridden 14 winners at 10 race meetings. including seven over the last six days.
He is likely to ride at Warwick or Chepstow on Wednesday.
