Proposal seeks minimum Rs 15,000 salary for journos
KATHMANDU, JUL 28 - A proposal has been tabled at the Federation of Nepali Journalists ( FNJ ) seeking to ensure a minimum monthly wage of Rs 15,000 for working journalists.
FNJ members Bal Krishna Basnet and Surya Mani Gautam put forth the proposal demanding increase in the salary of journalists in view of the increasing market price and pay raise of the civil employees.
"The minimum salary fixed for the working journalists doesn't match with the market situation and price rise," the proposal states. "At the same time, the salary of civil servants has also increased with the announcement of fiscal budget. Taking into account all these factors, the salary of working journalists should be increased."
The government had revised the salary and increased the pay packet by 39 percent in January as per which media houses have to pay at least Rs 10,008 and Rs 7,200 to journalists working in the Kathmandu valley and districts, respectively.
In accordance with the recommendation of Minimum Wage Determination Committee, the government had revised the minimum salary of journalists, making it Rs 10,008.
Likewise, the proposal has demanded the FNJ call a special general convention, stating that Pokhara convention failed to arrive at any conclusion regarding inclusive structure of the federation.
